2021 was a special year for the Afreximbank (the Bank) as it marked the end of its fifth Strategic Plan (2017-21). Despite unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years, the Bank remained focused on the pursuit of its strategic priorities. This year’s Annual Trade Development Effectiveness Report (ATDER) provides evidence on the contribution made by the Bank towards African trade and development over the past year under three of its key strategic pillars: Intra- African Trade, Industrialisation and Export Development, and Trade Finance Leadership. The ATDER also highlights some of the Bank’s key achievements under its fifth Strategic Plan. Africa is facing a pandemic without historical precedent. COVID-19 presents a massive shock to an already struggling health care system and regional manufacturing sector and has magnified social and economic inequalities. It has contributed to sharp falls in the prices of Africa’s top export products and reduced trade with the region’s top trading partners. Falling export revenues and deteriorating balance sheets due to the pandemic have limited access to foreign exchange liquidity and have widened the trade finance gap.
